MER FLASHBACK - A YEAR AGO:

"THE NEIGHBORHOOD BULLY"

"ARAB CONCERNS ABOUT DIGNITY, HONOR, AND FACE-SAVING DON'T COUNT FOR MUCH IN NETANYAHU'S WORLD. FROM PRACTICALLY THE MOMENT HE TOOK OFFICE LAST YEAR, HE HAS BEEN RUBBING PALESTINIANS' NOSES IN THEIR IMPOTENCE". - NEWSWEEK, 4/97

[MER - 4-15-97]
Even when the American media speaks up abit about the realities of Israel, it pulls its punches. Last week's Newsweek article about "The Neighborhood Bully" hardly tells the whole story.

First of all Israel is far more than "bully". Working in tandem with its American ally and benefactor -- and all but controlling U.S. Mid-East policies through the ubiquitous Israeli/Jewish lobby back in Washington -- what we have is more a modern-day Roman Empire with the Americans and Israelis determined to control all aspects of life throughout the Middle East, from politics to culture to military affairs. Those who play ball are rewarded, armed, and protected. Those who do not are starved, boycotted, and attacked.

Additionally, this is hardly something new to Netanyahu. How convenient for the Americans, and the oftentimes Zionist-dominated media, to pretend that one group of Israelis are the good guys, another the bully guys. How convenient to forget that before they found a quivering Arafat to resurrect and co-opt Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres were prominent members of the Yitzhak Shamir "unity" government.

In addition, how convenient for the Americans to forget to always mention that  without the money and arms continually provided by the U.S. in ever-increasing amounts for over 30 years Israel could not practice this "politics of humiliation" and the Palestinians would not be dispossessed and impotent. And how convenient for the Americans to minimize, and oftentimes not mention at all, the joint U.S.-Israeli role in propping up and keeping in place despicable Arab "client-regimes" who oppress their peoples with ever new means of repression, suppression and recycled American money.
