Quran-Competitions-Khatami /GNR/
Muslims called upon to show reverence for Islam before the world
Tehran, Oct 14, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami here on Sunday
called on world Muslims to show their exaltation for Islam in all of
life's material and spiritual fields and before all peoples of the
world.
His remarks were made during a speech he delivered before the
inaugural session of the 18th round of the International Quranic
Competition held on the eve of the auspicious occasion of
the anniversary of Mab'ath, the divine appointment of Prophet
Muhammad (peace be upon him) to the prophethood.
The Iranian president urged all Muslims to make use of all
tools and instruments to help establish appropriate political and
social systems and to utilize developed economy in their countries in
order to materialize exaltation of Islam compared with other religions
and schools of thought.
Almighty God has created man free and no one has the right to
deprive man from exercising sovereignty over his fate, he added.
Stressing on the importance of materialization of religious
democracy, President Khatami said that progress for Muslims in
the various scientific, technical and economic fields is the
most important task of all Muslims.
Islam and the holy Quran are neither tools for violence and
terrorist actions, nor are they instruments to justify helplessness
and incompetence of Muslims against enemies and those who have eyes on
interests and resources of the Islamic states, he reiterated.
Referring to the critical situation in neighboring Afghanistan, he
said that the Afghan nation has become a victim of oppression and
violation from two sides.
On the one hand, the Afghan people are facing despotic rulers
who, in the name of Islam, are propagating violence, war, genocide and
drugs in the world, while on the other hand they are faced with the
aggression of a foreign power which is taking revenge from criminal
and terrorist acts committed against innocent people, the president
stated.
Such a situation is an indication to degeneration of today's
man, he stressed adding that by resorting to the teachings and
messages of Islam, the today's man will be released of such a
situation.
Meanwhile, President Khatami presented some prizes to several
selected domestic and foreign reciters and memorizers of holy Quran.
Some 84 reciters, memorizers and interpretators of the holy
Quran from 34 Islamic countries are to compete in the four-day
international contest.
