Et tu Bush...
By L. Ramnarayan, Arab News Staff

In this variation of Mark Antony’s speech to the Romans over the body of Julius Caesar, a plea is being made to all honorable men.

Friends, Americans and people of the world, Lend me your ears. Today amid the massacre of a proud people and the wanton destruction of their every dream, the world stands helpless in the face of American intransigence. But Bush is an honorable man.

Platitudes for Palestinian courage abound but no action comes forth to stem Israel’s mindless savagery which, with Ariel Sharon at the helm, is committed to continuing its policy of exterminating Palestine. But Sharon too is an honorable man.

The use of the word ‘terror’, rather the abuse of it, is terrifying. What America, with its complicity, and Israel, with its actions, are doing is sowing terror in the name of fighting it. But Bush is an honorable man.

Siege prevails as first the Palestinian leader and then the Palestinian people are ringed in by Israel’s military might in an attempt to smother every expression of a just fight for their rights. But Sharon is an honorable man.

Carnage followed. With Israel relentlessly continuing to push into Palestine despite an outraged world’s calling for an ‘immediate” pullback, it was inevitable. Bush too joined in saying, “Pull back NOW.” But Bush is an honorable man.

Called a ‘Man of Peace’ by Bush, Sharon - told to withdraw “Now, without delay, not tomorrow” - caused the lone superpower to blink first as he continued his quest for peace through the barrels of guns. But Sharon is an honorable man.

With minimal Congressional backing for a tough stance against Israel as Democrats and Republicans vied to outdo each other in pledging their backing for Israel, Bush kept on calling on a besieged Yasser Arafat “to do more”. But Bush is an honorable man.

As evidence of genocide unfolds in Jenin, Sharon continues to do the only thing he knows best - attempting to cow his opponents with every military means in his arsenal against a helpless people. But Sharon is an honorable man.

While continuing to support Israel in the world forum and increasing material support to it, the US at every opportunity stifles minimal Palestinian aspirations and hopes. But Bush is an honorable man.

While expressing his regret at not killing Arafat when he had the opportunity in the 1980s, Sharon seems to be seeking to complete this ‘job’ with a tactic that flies in the face of all reason. But Sharon is an honorable man.

And Bush, in condoning this ‘collective punishment’ of civilians in Palestine, is making a mistake. But ‘make no mistake’- and he seems to be prone to make many - this will eventually come back to haunt him. But Bush is an honorable man.

Bush this time abruptly backed down from a confrontation with Sharon. Sooner or later, he will have to take Sharon on, this time without blinking. For injustice and repression can just cannot continue. Then Sharon will surely say “Et tu Bush?”
