Rudolf Vrba, a Jewish Sonderkommando alias Walter Rosenberg, is not just any 'survivor'; he and a certain Wetzler claimed to have escaped the camp in the spring of 1944, and it was their horrific eye-witness account, edited by the Slovakian Jewish community leaders, which was released in November 1944 by the War Refugee Board in Washington (in fact by Henry Morgenthau acting behind the back of, and against the wishes of, the two other Board members Henry Stimson and Cordell Hull).
Defence attorney Doug Christie, of Victoria, challenged Vrba's earlier testimony (in the Zundel trial) that he saw a SS soldier in a gasmask pouring poison gas into a low bunker conected to a Birkenau crematorium. Vrba admitted he was never inside that particular bunker, after Christie suggested it was the roof of a mortuary Vrba had seen, not a gas chamber.
When Christie pointed out that ('Nazi government') documents say nothing about gas chambers, Vrba replied: 'It might be a typing error.'
Vrba also said increasing estimates of the Auschwitz death toll in the decades after World War II 'just shows that better scholars with better methods are constantly improving the information.'
Vrba stated how in January 1943, to commemorate the visit by Himmler, the first gassing in the crematorium at Birkenau was initiated.
Problem: Himmler's last visit was 7/42, the crematorium (where no gassings ever occurred) wasn't even finished until 3/43.
