The Palestinian minister for non-government organisations, Hassan Asfour, and his bodyguard, were beaten by masked men tonight in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Asfour's wife told AFP.
The five masked men then ran away, leaving Asfour and his bodyguard lying on the ground.
The incident happened near Asfour's home at about 9pm (0500 AEST), she said.
The minister was taken to the hospital for treatment, Asfour's wife Maha said, without giving further details.
The general secretary of the Palestinian Authority's cabinet, Ahmed Abdul Rahman, confirmed Asfour had been attacked and that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat had ordered security forces to find the assailants.
Several Palestinian ministers headed to Sheikh Zayed hospital in Ramallah to visit Asfour at his bedside.
