I admit it: The only reason I attended the April 20 pro-Palestinian rally
in Washington, D.C., was to cause trouble. Put 50,000
fundamentalist Muslims, angry Arab-Americans, '60s-liberal leftovers and
tie-dyed, 20-something neo-hippies in the same place, and the comedy
potential is too great to pass up.

So on Saturday morning, I parked my car a safe distance away and strolled
toward the Washington Monument. The first thing I noticed was that I had
been the victim of false advertising. This was not a 'pro-Palestine'
rally. It was a 'Down with Israel and George Bush' rally.

While the throng was thick with banners, very few of them mentioned the
Palestine Authority and none - not one that I saw - mentioned the
Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat. Instead, most of the messages were
condemnations of Israel and Ariel Sharon. One popular motif was mixing the
Swastika and the Star of David, a gruesome image for anyone but the most
ardent Holocaust denier. And just to make sure the point wasn't missed,
the crowd repeatedly chanted, 'Sharon and Hitler are the same, the only
difference is their name.'

There was no doubt as to what the crowd was against: the 'racist' nation
of Israel and the evil government of America and its terrorist leader,
George W. Bush. But what were these people for? Did they really support
the creation of a new Arab Muslim nation led by Arafat?

To find out, I waded into the crowd with my minidisk recorder and started
asking questions.

To Amanda from Atlanta in the 'Free Speech, Free Media' T-shirt, I posed
the question: 'Which nongovernment-controlled Arab newspaper is your
favorite?' When she couldn't answer, I pointed out that there aren't any
nongovernment-controlled newspapers in the Arab Muslim world.

'Are you comfortable supporting the cause of a group of people who don't
believe in either free speech or a free press?'

'I, uh, really, uh, that's a good question,' was the best she could do.

Then I asked the gay-rights advocate with the 'From Stonewall To
Palestine: People Fight Back' sign: 'Doesn't it bother you that
virtually all Arab Muslim governments outlaw homosexuality? That most of
the people in this crowd think you should be stoned to death?'

'I hadn't really thought about it,' he replied.

And of every woman I met protesting on behalf of a new, Arafat-led nation,
I asked: 'Do you really want to see yet another Arab Muslim nation where
women have few if any political rights (Kuwait), are lashed for committing
adultery (United Arab Emirates) or are the victims of female genital
mutilation (Saudi Arabia)?'

Vanessa, a liberal feminist from Michigan, answered this way: 'That's
their thing, and I disbelieve [sic] in that, but it's not just there.
Women everywhere are captized [sic].' She went on to tell me that all
Americans are 'captized' too, but she wasn't exactly sure by whom.

When I asked Amina and Amira, two female Arab students from George
Washington University, they had a novel response: They refused to
acknowledge that any Arab Muslim nations restrict women's rights. I
pointed out the obvious case of Saudi Arabia - where women cannot leave
their homes without permission and can be beaten for showing too much skin
in public. They all but laughed at me: 'Saudi Arabia does not have a
Muslim government,' Amira told me.
So the Saudis are, what - Lutherans?

As I worked the crowd, I was tailed by a group of Arab gentlemen who
listened in on several conversations before finally confronting me: 'Why
are you asking these questions?'

I told them I wanted to know if the people waving their 'free speech/free
press/free love/free Mumia' signs understood that they
were at a rally supporting yet another oppressive, theocratic, dictatorial
regime.

'That's none of our business,' said Khalid, a Moroccan living in
Massachusetts. 'All I want is for the Palestinians to be free. This
is all about freedom.' Before I could crack, 'Then they should move to
Israel, the only place in the Mideast where Palestinians can
vote,' he interrupted again.

'You know what, America's government isn't the best government in the
world. Do you like everything your government does?'

'Of course I don't always like my government,' I told him. 'But unlike
Arafat, when I say so, my American government doesn't throw me in jail or
kill me. And my government-approved Imam doesn't write editorials for
government-run newspapers urging Muslims to kill Jews.'

'That's not killing Jewish people,' Khalid said. 'It's liberating
Palestinians.'

'So, that's what you call it!' I replied.

The conversation was over. I moved on to another strategy. I put down my
recorder and picked up a large, hand-made sign. It read: 'HEROES FOR
PEACE: Gandhi, MLK, Arafat.'

It was, I thought, the perfect sign. It was parodying the Palestinian
position, but without the obviousness of, say, 'Suicide Bombers for
Peace,' a sign that might have earned me a bloody nose.

I took my insult to Dr. King and the nonviolence movement, and I marched
into the heart of the crowd. I waved it, I shook it, I
covered the rally from front to back. I pointed it at black ministers in
the crowd and watched them read it. I stood next to 'Down with
Israel' signs and held it high. And I waited.

When would someone challenge this obnoxious argument? After half an hour,
someone finally spoke up. A plump, middle-aged liberal with her 'Visualize
World Peace' button read my sign, then looked up at me and smiled. 'God
bless you,' she said.

No, I thought as I walked dejectedly back to my car, God help us.
We're gonna need it.

What Michael doesnt seem to understand is that Arafat, despite being the democratically elected leader of the palestinian people doesnt hold a tight grip over his people. The palestinians are represented by a multitude of political parties with very different, sometimes conflicting political agenda.Just like in good old America..

Also good old america supports , arms and protects 90% of arab dictators. With the last 10% i.e Saddam, Khaddafi, Assad she differs on economical and political topics. Morality and ethics were never an issue.

But again Michael , who thinks he's so smart and original either doesnt know those things or doesnt care anyway, coz he has one sole purpose: discredit the palestinian cause and its supporters in the west.

So cut down on the preaching mr 'im full- of-shit' coz an arab awakening is the last thing u or ur government want.

ps: ive read many comments on the plight of the kurdish people. Let it be clear that the kurds are being opressed by some arab regimes but also by Iran(the one of today and believe me it was much worse during the days of the shah). Not to mention Turkey, a staunch US ally with ties to Israel.

Question:
Which intelligence agencies were involved in abducting the kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan?

Im sure Michael and friends can provide us with the details.

Geez, talk about apologists...You take the cake ma man.

OK everybody, repeat after me: Palestine good, Israel bad. One more time Palestine good, Israeli bad.

OK folks, get your signs and get out there and fight the evil racist empire of Israel that controls over 1% of the Middle East.
Whatever you do don't bring up the fact that we ARABs have been trying to destroy Israel and kill the Jews who live there since 1949. It doesn't make for as good of a story when you do that. It makes the Israeli positions more understandable, and we wouldn't want that now would we.

Already now get out there, jihad! jihad! jihad!

Two options:
1) They return to Israel in exchange for Palestinians living in Israel.

2) They remain where they are living in the new Palestinian state. If Palestinians have the right to live in Israel, then Jews should have the right to live in Palestine.

Now, there could be an arrangement made whereby the Palestinians living in Israel are actually citizens of Palestine and the Jews living in Palestine are actually citizens of Israel, but I'll leave that to the experts.

What do you think should be done with them?

Why not get one big state for everyone then?
We can call it something cute too.

If they accept to live under palestinian rule and palestinian law then that could be a way to go. I Dont think its realistic though. They barely accept Israeli rule (they think they are on some holy mission or something).

The simpler way would be for them to leave. They are there illegally by any international standards.

While we're discussing it,Israel is still expanding its settlements on a daily basis, so obviously peace is not what they have on their minds.

I don't like extremist settlers any more than you, and when the Arabs are ready to make real peace, I'll strap on my gear and haul there ass out of there if that is what is agreed upon by the parties. You can keep the nice new homes for returning Palestinians. But this will only happen through peace negotiations and your Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and even Arafat seem dead set against real negotiations. They don't want to give in and give up anything.
At least that is the way it seems.

Just as an aside, if I were asked to set things up so that there would be minimal problems in the future I'd have all the settlers transfered from Judea Samaria and exchanged for all the Muslim Palestinians in Isarel. The Christian Palestinians, Druze, and Bedouin would all remain in Israel as full Israeli citizens. I think that given the birth rates of the respective groups this would be the best situation for future harmony between the two groups. As relations improve over the years there would be quite a bit of exchange between the two countries, but initially separation would be advised.

your thoughts?

The transfer of the arab muslim population is not doable. U are talking about nearly 15% of the population of the state of israel. That is just unconceivable.Besides who says that palestinian christians and others will choose to live as an insignificant minority.

Anyway the latest figures (published in Israeli newspapers like MAARIV) show that only 73% of the population in Israel is Jewish. 20% are arabs and the rest, the 7% are due to interfaith marriages and the latest bunch of immigrants from the former soviet union.

My personal opinion is that the concept of a pure jewish state is only a myth. In this time and age, it should be abandonned. If jews want to live in this part of the world, then they should adopt a completely different attitude. The Iron wall has collapsed and serious concessions will have to be made.
Hamas and Islamic jihad do not represent arab nor muslim public opinion, but despair and israeli policies have made it possible for them to become the champions of the palestinian cause.
Most arabs want peace but not at the expense of the rights of their palestinian brothers.(remember that million of palestinians have been living in refugee camps in neighbouring countries).Any solution should take those into accounts.

If Israel sincerely wants peace it should seek it with the arab people not with their corrupted and biggoted rulers.

ARAB - I agree with you about the poor quality of Arab rulers, but I'll leave that to the Arab people to take care of.

As for Israel being a Jewish State, although I'm not a particularly religious person, I believe that there needs to be one Jewish State in a world where there are many Islamic states, a Hindu State, and multiple Christian States. If any group of people has evidence for the need for such a state it is the Jews. Just read the posts in this forum that transcend any legitimate critique of Israeli policy and vividly express the very real danger that anti-semitism poses to Jews.

As for Palestinian Christians living as a minority, well, they are going to be a minority in either country. Which one do you think they'd prefer to live in? My guess is that at least half would want to be minorities in Israel, not Palestine.

No one is asking for a 'pure Jewish' state, they are simply asking for a Jewish state. One that won't be a state with a minority of Jews in 50 years because of irresponsible birthrate practices of Muslim Palestinians.

Both Israelis and Palestinians should have 2 children max. There is not enough water or land to house or support more people in the area. But Palestinians openly brag about the use of 'birthicide' as a weapon to obtain control over the land of Israel.

ARAB - You say Hamas and IJ don't represent the mainstream Palestinians. Thanks to Arafat's failed terror strategy they are looking more and more alike. The recent Palestinian poll showed that a majority of Palestinians now are fighting for all of Israel, not just the West Bank. This is highly problematic.

What do you think of that poll?

Final thought: If Palestinians are allowed to live in Israel, don't you think Jews should be allowed to live in the future Palestine?

Michael - You are wrong about Arabs and homosexuality. While homosexuality is frowned upon in some Arab countries, in Palestine it is not a big issue. Yasser Arafat is a homosexual and it is not a problem with Palestinians. His financial practices are more of an issue.

Briefly .

I do not see a problem with jews living in an independent palestinian state. But again its for the palestinians to decide.needless to say that a hebron-like situation is unacceptable, the IDF will have to withdraw from the totality of the west bank and Gaza.

Concerning the poll.It does reflect the current mood of the arab street. Similar polls have come out with similar results in israeli society. :Calls for transfer, all-out war and the likes. Emotions are running high on both sides.
Lets be frank, even if we wanted to throw the jews in the sea, we cant.israel has the ultimate weapon of mass destruction:The nuclear bomb.So its a lot of crap talk after all.

But We might not need to do more than we're doing these days :making ur life a living hell and waiting. Already jewish emigration from Israel has reached unprecedented levels. While immigration is stumbling.

I suggest that the Israelis make an effort to be accepted as equals. because as rulers they will be fought till the last man standing.
