It is now on the table. There is no political posturing or game playing. Fifty-one percent of Palestinians now want the destruction and liquidation of the state of Israel. A completely unacceptable position has been taken by a population that seems to be on a path of self-destruction.
What kind of value system wants to destroy the existence of an entire society? What kind of society reveres its young people killing themselves for the purpose of killing others? How does a world purporting itself to be civilized stand by and watch this attitude of barbarism?
What will the United Nations say now? Will it continue to condemn Israel while endorsing the Palestinian view that the destruction of Israel and the Jewish people living there is the only answer to this problem? And with the majority of Palestinians continuing to support Yasser Arafat, are we on a path of irreconcilable differences in the Middle East?
Ask yourself what you would do if 21 of your neighbors were bent on your removal from your neighborhood and used violence to force you out. Do we give in to threat, coercion, intimidation and violence when valueless thugs try to impose their will on others? Israel faces that challenge right now, since 20 of the 22 Arab countries and the Palestinians oppose even the existence of Israel.
Israel has consistently offered a dual-state solution to the Middle East dilemma. Prime Minister Sharon said several months ago that one week of peace and no homicide bombings would lead to peace talks to discuss a new Palestinian state. That, of course, did not happen.
The real enemy of the Palestinians is Hamas, Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade and Yasser Arafat. They are willing to use any willing adult or child to carry out acts of suicide and homicide. They are the ones indoctrinating young people with virulent hate for the Jewish people, Israel and the United States.
We should all be reminded that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. Recently, a Jordanian journalist was imprisoned for one and a half years for criticizing the government in the press. And Jordan is one of the more moderate Arab states!! But there are Israeli Arabs in the Knesset, and all Arab Israelis have the same rights as Jewish and Christian Israelis.
And ask yourself when it was that we discussed the displaced Jewish population that became refugees from the Arab world and its mistreatment by these dictatorships. There were 700,000 Jews displaced, just as there were 700,000 Palestinians displaced.
But the Palestinians left because the Arab countries told them to do so in order for the Egyptians, Jordanians, Iraqis and Syrians to defeat the newly proclaimed Jewish state. They lost and caused the misery of the Palestinians we see today.
There was a European leader who, more than 60 years ago, was bent on the destruction of the Jewish people. Apparently, his ideology is alive and well in the Palestinian territories.
Golda Meir made an observation that was never more relevant than it is today: There will be peace in the Middle East when the Palestinians love their children more than they hate Israel.
