I don't know exactly what kind of people post on this message board, but I would like the opinion of Arabs, Palestenians, Muslims, etc., or anybody who knows more about Palestine than I do.

There is a lot of talk about replacing Arafat. Are there many Palestinians/Arabs who would agree with this? I have to say that it seems horrible that the US and Israel are just trying to pick who they negotiate with, but I wonder if there is any true popular support for it?

Mostly I'm interested in who would succeed him. I've heard a lot of names pop up in the media as possible successors, but I have to say the Palestinian leader I am most impressed with is Legislature member HANAN ASHRAWI. Any chance she will be the next leader? Any popular support for her?

If not, who do you think it will be? Please let me know.
Thanks

Is there anybody endorsed by Hamas that Israel and the U.S. would agree to? If not, they might as well stick with Arafat.

The palestinians will not support any replacement of Arafat specifically because he will be hand-picked by Iarael and the US.

There isnt anyone in sight who could replace Arafat. His entourage is corrupt and hated by the population. A population that if given the right to choose will pick radical leaders determined to follow the path of armed struggle.

The only one I can see to have a chance of becoming a succesoor to araft in the long run, who is pragmatic but loyal to the cause is Marwan Barghouti, the Fatah leader in the west bank. Loved by the people and respected by all factions. He is currently in an Israeli jail, under torture and interrogation. U can guess how fond of the israelis he will become after those reeducation sessions.

Do not let them fool you. The best bet for the israelis and the americans is Yasser Arafat. Its either Arafat or chaos.

I hope that answers ur questions

Ashrawi is a Christian. Not likely to be elected.

ARAB may be right here.
Barghouti is a known terrorist with the blood of children on his hands. He is despised by Israelis.
If the Israelis can have Sharon, the Palestinians can have Barghouti. Just pray he doesn't take the same path of destruction as Arafat.

Re: 'Barghouti is a known terrorist with the blood of children on his hands. He is despised by Israelis.'

I am glad to hear that Sharon is not in Barghouti's catagory, child killer and all. Oh, and the Palestinian's adore him hahahaha!

Coming from a Jew that knows full well that 100% of Israel's leaders have all been low life terrorists and murderers I am surprised SoulJah wasn't left breathless.

Force 1 ( Sharon ) IRGUN ( Begin ) Haganah ( Dayan, Ben-Gurion, Shamir, et.al.

The sad thing is that the future political leaders of Israel will be mass murderers and thugs trained by the IDF in Lebanon, the West Bank & Gaza.

Moses would be spinning in his grave if he knew just how far his arrogant incorrigibles had gone after he cashed in his chips!

I didn't realize Hanan Ashwari was a Christian. That is really fascinating. Forgive my ignorance, but what percentage of the pop. is Christian?

I have to say, it seems to me it would be hard to give up Arafat. He has been the symbol of resistance for so long. He's really like a mystical figure. And I really think he loves the Palestinians (that's my laypersons view anywaY.. correct me if I'm wrong). Also, forgive me, but he seems pretty damn moderate compared to many of the alternatives. I think it's ridiculous to say Arafat is an extremist and then say Sharon, who approved the butcher of over 800 palestinians in lebanon is not!

Anway does anybody have any other suggestions for a replacement? Someone has suggested to me Saeb Erakat (sp?), I don't know much about him, but I believe he's also a Christian, so that must also be out of the question.

One more thing... I am not a Christian, a Muslim or A Jew so I'm not being biased, but I have to ask: Is there really no chance for Hanan Ashwari? I just have to say that she seems to me to be the most effective spokesperson for Palestine. Regardless, what do you think of her as a person? To me she seems very amazing. What do you think of her?

I am not 100% sure, but I dont think Ashrawi is christian.Understand that the people cannot identify whith Ashrawi or Arafat or any of the western-educated elite. U need someone who has bit of both.

The percentage that is christian is about 5 to 10%. Its hard to get an accurate number because of emigration and lack of official census.

Souljah, Ur government has no proof against Barghouti. Show me one piece of evidence.
Yes Barghouti is not a dove but who can be more hawkish than Sharon. And against Sharon there is proof that he has blood on his hand.

Hannan Ashrawri is indeed a Christian and chainsmokes like a chimney too. Great Lady, lot's of guts and raw courage. Alas, I feel she was given her posting to appease the Palestinian Christian minority. Yasser has almost reached mystical proportions with the people and he has become the symbol of continued Palestinian resistance ever since the invasion by Israeli troops. Given that Sharon and Arafat are roughly both the same age, it is gonna be right interestin` to see who outlives the other. The Zionist ghouls have thrown everything at him bar the nukes and he still 'keeps keeping on like an Everyready battery'. That's what I like about Yasser, a real thorn in the backside of that oversized Zionist walrus Sharon.
