What Khomeini wrote is meaningless, Calvin, because he reniged on every promise he made. He promised an Islamic democracy with full human and civic rights. What he created was nothing more than Islamic version of the Shah, actually much worse because he took his actions in the name of Islam.

The Iranian press was shocked when he told them 'I will break your teeth' for criticising him. They believed his promise of a free press. This is the problem when you join the nation's spiritual and political leader into one man. If you criticize him, you are seen as criticizing Islam. When you have the power to shut their mouths, most leaders will use it.

My opinion is Khomeini's revolution has been a complete failure, mainly because he didn't really trust the Iranian people with freedom. But as Dinesh D'Souza points out in this excellent article.

http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/comment-dsouza070302.asp

When you coerce virtue, you don't create a virtuous nation, you create a nation of hypocrites.

The present government in Iran has caused great damage to Islam. The people hold the clerics in contempt, and it's a short walk to hold the entire religion in contempt as well.

Last week's rounding up and imprisonment of student activists highlights the extreme weakness and fragility of the present system. It's a scenario that cannot continue on it's present course.

Iran: Dilemmas of Dual Containment
Anthony H. Cordesman Ahmed S. Hashim
This volume provides a detailed analysis of Iran's politics, economics, energy exports, security and military forces, as well as an examination of current Western policy toward Iran and its regional activities and support of Islamic extremists. The impact of sanctions and the U.S. policy of 'dual containment' are examined in detail along with different strategies for dealing with Iran and Iran's efforts to acquire weapons of mass destruction.

This is typical, when you challenge anyone on this board, all you get are insults.

Facts are hard to get around Calvin, and the facts are that last week a leading Iranian cleric resigned with a scathing five-page indictment against the current regime and it's corruption.

Khatami always talks a good game, but he's allowed the hard-liners to silence him, and he doesn't have the courage to challenge their authority. How can you advocate a dialogue among civilizations when you don't even allow it within your own country? It's all lies.

My network with Iranians is extensive, albeit mostly Iranian-Americans, but they've all got relatives in Iran, and I'm hearing the same thing from all of them. This revolution has failed.

All you have is theory, Calvin. The reality is burying your position in a huge pile of... well, I won't trade insults. I respect your opinion even though you don't respect mine.

I agree with Captain Marvel that Khatami is afraid to stand up to the Mullah's. They allow Khatami to stay because they know the young are looking to him for change. The Mullah's are trying to put a lid on a growing pressure cooker of rising young disaffected uni students who want greater personal freedoms and the right to express themselves. They USE Khatami as a soothing voice to placicate their growing anger.......

Iran is in for one hell of a shake up. I only hope it doesn't turn into a bloody affair....
The people of Iran have suffered enough already.
