Former prime minister Benyamin Netanyahu has been wooing Israel's Anglo community this week ahead of his anticipated challenge to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's leadership of the Likud Party.
Native English-speakers across the country came home to find a recorded message on their answer-machines from Netanyahu, using his famously fluent English to encourage them to join the party.
New members recruited to the party by Netanyahu are considered far more likely to vote for him when the expected leadership face-off occurs ahead of next year's general election, an aide to the ex-premier told Anglo File yesterday.
Netanyahu's office obtained the list of native English-speakers used in the telephone campaign from a database owned by the Likud Party, the aide said, adding he did not know from what source the list of Anglo-Israelis was compiled. Voters, he said, were targeted irrespective of any current political affiliations.
Netanyahu's wide-reaching membership drive, which was also conducted in Hebrew for native Israelis, was instigated in response to an earlier initiative by Prime Minister and current Likud Party Chairman Ariel Sharon, said the aide. The recruitment campaign, which began last week, is set to draw to a close at the end of this month.
'I would like to know how [Netanyahu] got my home phone number and knew I'm an Anglo,' a former Londoner told Anglo File yesterday.

God save us all! When you didn't think it possible that there is a person as equally repugnant as Ari'Hell in Israeli politics, this man turns up like a bad penny. The only difference between Nut-in-ya-hoo and Ari'Hell is that one is a crude thug and the other is a smooth talking slithering snake!!
