Italians in Uproar Over Child Porn

ROME –– Top Italian television executives resigned Thursday after state TV aired graphic images in a prime-time news report on child pornography. The broadcasts, seen by nearly 11 million people, shocked Italy and ignited a political firestorm.
The Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano criticized TV for worshipping a 'cult' of sensational images and said the broadcasts had 'violated Italian families' in the guise of news.
'The images transmitted last night were not just an offense to viewers, but most of all to the children represented – twice victims, twice exploited, twice violated when they should have been protected,' it said.
An anchorman and two assistant news directors resigned Thursday, and two top news executives offered to follow suit.
The case hit the news a day earlier, when police said they had broken up an online international child pornography ring, arrested eight Italians and three Russians and seized thousands of videos and photographs.
The Russian-run ring, which distributed an explicit catalog on the Internet, catered to clients in the United States, Italy and Germany. Its inventory included films of children being tortured and killed.
State television's RAI Tre station showed some of the photos and graphic snippets of video during the 7 p.m. newscast Wednesday.
RAI Uno did the same an hour later, even though complaints had already started pouring in. By the end of the30 -minute broadcast, RAI Uno's news director, Gad Lerner, was on the air apologizing for images 'not only unwatchable but violent.'
Called on the carpet Thursday, Lerner and his RAI Tre counterpart Nino Rizzo Nervo both admitted they didn't know what was going to be on the broadcasts.
The uproar threatened to overshadow the horror over the pedophilia case itself.
Investigators say the pornography ring produces and distributes images showing children as young as 2 years old being sexually abused. Some of the victims were reportedly stolen from orphanages; others from families.
Its catalog offers films of killings for about $20, 000and images of people having sex with children for half that. Images of children being kidnapped are relatively cheap at less than $200.
RAI Uno's broadcast showed pages from the catalog and a video of a man apparently having sex with a little girl.
The attacks on RAI came from both the left and the right.
The communist newspaper Liberazione ran indignant letters from viewers on the front page. In parliament, the center-right opposition scolded RAI and demanded Lerner and Rizzo Nervo's resignations be accepted.
Never prudish, Italian TV has grown increasingly daring about sex and violence. The Italian version of 'Big Brother,' for example, routinely shows nudity and sex.
Aldo Grasso, one of Italy's most respected television critics, said the RAI broadcasts were 'symptomatic of what has been happening in Italian TV, both state and private, over the last couple of years.'
'Editors are driven not by quality or responsibility toward viewers but only the ratings,' he told The Associated Press. 'Disturbing and violent images intrude in all kinds of programs, throughout the day.'
The UNICEF head in Italy, Giovanni Micali, also complained bitterly about rising violence. 'It was an extreme case, but not the first and not the only one,' he said of the RAI newscasts.
Top government officials promised action.
The justice minister said he was looking into how RAI got the material and the telecommunications minister said prosecutors were checking to see if RAI's broadcast had violated the law.

OAKLAND An unemployed Walnut Creek man's purchases of hundreds of videotapes and computer discs depicting children having sex included every title a Russian pornography ring offered on its Web site, records show.
Federal authorities arrested Seth Bekenstein at his Treat Boulevard apartment Thursday after an investigation of his child pornography imports triggered by evidence uncovered when Moscow and American officials shuttered the ring's Web site, records show.
Bekenstein bought more than $4, 000worth of child pornography over the Internet, making him the Russian organization's 'best customer,' according to testimony included in federal court records.
He also is suspected of reselling the material to American customers.
Bekenstein appeared Friday in federal court. He glanced briefly about the courtroom gallery but otherwise looked at Magistrate Wayne Brazil with his hands cupped in front of him.
He nodded and said, 'Yes, your honor,' as Brazil explained a complaint accusing him of importing the illegal material.
Bekenstein will be held at least until Monday, giving him the weekend to hire the private attorney he requested. A bail hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
'There's already overwhelming evidence of guilt,' assistant U.S. attorney Miles Ehrlich told Brazil during the10 -minute court proceeding.
U.S. Customs Service agents involved in the case declined comment. Calls to the customs office in San Francisco were not returned.
Bekenstein was arrested Thursday after customs agents serving a search warrant on his Treat Boulevard housing complex hauled box after box of videotapes, photographs and CD-ROMs from his apartment.
Court records show that about 100 videotapes and 400 discs were seized during the operation, as well as 'numerous printed pictures depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit activity.' Only about 20 have been viewed by agents so far, an official wrote in an affidavit.
By some estimates, as many as9 , 000images can be recorded on one CD-ROM.
The investigation began in May, thousands of miles from the quiet apartment complex where residents denied knowing Bekenstein. Moscow city police and the customs attache joined forces to investigate a Web site displaying child pornography that became known to officials as 'Blue Orchid,' court records show.
Two Russians who had received money on behalf of Blue Orchid through Western Union transfers were singled out. One recorded payment of $ 380to Sergey Yuryevich Akimov dated March 13 contained Bekenstein's credit card information, the complaint shows.
On Dec.7 , Akimov told Moscow police he was collecting the money for another man who lost his passport, court papers show. For the service that Akimov said he carried out about 40 times, a third Russian, identified as Solntsev Elbe, would hand over a small fee, records show.
Two days after Akimov's interrogation, police located Elbe, who fingered Sergey Gromov, according to the complaint. Gromov was the Blue Orchid kingpin, Elbe had said.
Elbe consented under Russian law, the complaint shows, to a search of his apartment. Investigators found videotapes, VCRs and videotape sleeves that Elbe told police were used to conceal Blue Orchid tapes during shipment.
Some of the confiscated recordings were sealed in professionally printed boxes bearing the name 'National Geographic,' records show. An agent viewing one of the cassettes listed as a documentary about pandas informed other investigators that the tape began with the named program, but eventually shifted gears.
'The tape then displayed three underage boys engaged in sexually explicit activities,' according to the agent's partial summary of the tape titled 'Russian Flowers #4.'
Also found at the Russian apartment, records show, was an overnight shipping company receipt with a Moscow address listed as the location of the sender and Bekenstein as the recipient. The package had been signed for on Sept. 11 in Walnut Creek, a customs agent discovered.
On Dec.22 , the San Francisco customs office learned from investigators in Moscow that Gromov had said during questioning Bekenstein had been his 'most frequent purchaser of child pornography,' the complaint shows. The Russian suspect also said the man was his 'best customer,' having purchased every videotape and CD-ROM title they offered through the Internet, records show.
Several days after Christmas, agents began investigating Bekenstein. They learned he had lived at other locations in California, Wisconsin and New York.
A computer search turned up a 1987 arrest in New York City for felony sexual abuse and a misdemeanor charge of failing to exercise control. He pleaded guilty on Christmas Eve 1987 and was put on three years' probation, records show.
Court documents list six different shipments from Blue Orchid to the Walnut Creek address in March, May, June and July of last year. Total cost of the orders was $4,080, records show.
An agent wrote in the complaint that evidence uncovered during Thursday's search also indicated the videos were being redistributed. Specifically, a man by the name of 'Gary' would pay $ 50for two child pornography CD-ROMs.
A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Francisco could not comment on the case other than to say authorities usually have 10 court days to seek an indictment.

OAKLAND A Walnut Creek man accused of being the 'best customer' of Russian child pornography kingpins is now himself suspected of being a 'major distributor' of illegal sexual materials, federal officials disclosed Friday.
As the investigation of Seth Bekenstein,39 , continues to evolve, authorities are diving deeper into the world of a man they believe trafficked in vast amounts of kiddie porn, said Elise Becker, an assistant U.S. attorney.
'At this time, we do actually think he is a major distributor both in the United States and abroad,' Becker told Magistrate Wayne Brazil during a bail hearing Friday in U.S. District Court in Oakland. 'This has been his life for the past year.'
More than a week after Bekenstein was arrested, agents with the U.S. Customs Service continued Friday to pull computerized and printed pornography from his Treat Boulevard apartment.
Investigators tallying evidence in what they believe is an elaborate distribution scheme have confiscated nearly 700 CD-ROMs, about 100 printed pictures and 100 videotapes. Agents think hundreds of thousands of other images depicting children in various sex acts are stored in a hard drive and external computer files, Becker said.
She added that Bekenstein, who was released Friday afternoon on $500,000 bond his brother posted, continues to receive packages of suspected illegal porn at his apartment and at a post office box. Brazil authorized agents to intercept and inspect those mailings.
Josh Bekenstein, who traveled to Oakland from his home in Massachusetts, tried to beat back the prosecutor's allegations that his brother was a serious flight risk and had access to what Becker said was an 'unlimited amount of money.'
'I don't think there is any evidence he would move out of the country,' Josh Bekenstein said, standing a foot or two away from his brother.
'I think there is extremely strong evidence that this community is important to him. I think our family is a very supportive family. And I think we want to get him the help he needs.'
Before signing papers that freed his brother, Josh Bekenstein explained that his brother had no individual access to a trust fund containing $300,000 set up when his mother died.
Josh Bekenstein declined to comment following the proceedings through his brother's attorney, Cristina Arguedas.
Arguedas told Brazil the government's case was overblown and that evidence will ultimately show that her client is not a major kiddie porn dealer.
'This is a man who, except for one year, has lived here for nine years,' Arguedas said. 'To say he has ties to Russia and he could go live there is a bit of a stretch.'
Conditions of Seth Bekenstein's release call for him to wear a monitoring device, not leave Alameda or Contra Costa counties, not use a computer, stay away from children and look for a job.
Bekenstein, who also suffers from depression and controlling impulses, also must continue taking prescribed medications and meeting with a therapist twice weekly, the judge ordered.
Agents arrested him Jan. 4 after an investigation of a Web site operated by Russians in Moscow led authorities to Walnut Creek. Under police questioning, one Russian suspect said Bekenstein was their 'best customer' because he had bought every videotape title they sold, court records showed.
The foreign suspects are being prosecuted in their country, Becker said Friday.
