The last time I visited Cairo, the capital of the Arab Republic of Egypt, was five years ago, in September 2002. I had stayed in transit for two nights, but Egypt was not the object of interest for me at the time (never mind the fact that I had made an elliptical reference to the city in a series of reports that I wrote for Daily Trust when I returned home).
