Two-month U.S. death toll in Iraq hits new peak (USA Today)

Increased military activity throughout Iraq has pushed U.S. troop deaths to their highest level for any two-month period of the war. Pentagon records show that 115 troops have been killed so far in May. That raises the total for the past two months to 219, exceeding the 215 who died in April and May of 2004, when U.S. forces fought insurgents in Fallujah.

As of Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at least 3,466 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven military civilians. At least 2,826 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.
