    Back in 1977, Menachem Begin became prime minister of Israel. He was curious about a visit my friend Gordy Zacks had made to Egypt a year earlier. Back then, it was nearly impossible for Jewish-Americans like Gordy to gain access to Egypt. Begin thought Gordy might have useful insight into the thinking of mainstream Egyptians.
