Ahmadinejad to pursue new policy that would lead to breaking the deadlock over the talks
|
The policy Iran pursued with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the EU Big Three; Britain, Germany and France, with who it is negotiating the future of its nuclear program, prove that the Islamic republic is indeed staking everything.
Commenting on the remarks of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani, in which he stated that in case the EU continues to reject the nuclear fuel cycle program, the Islamic Republic would withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and deny IAEA inspectors access to its nuclear facilities, analysts say that Iran is totally aware of the grave concerns its withdrawal from the treaty will arise in the EU, as it will be a clear signal that a nuclear program is ready for military application.
Some may ask why did Iran chose to take this stance, described by Western diplomats as “tough”, ruling out whatever compromise that can be reached at the nuclear negotiating table, specially that the new government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had promised to pursue new policy that would lead to breaking the deadlock over the talks.
Analysts suggest that the Islamic republic is engineering the unveiling of its nuclear dossier to the UN Security Council which would prompt its arch enemy, the United States, to reciprocate.
Indeed, Iran has cunningly chosen the right time for attacking the positions of the EU in the negotiating process and of the United States, which is seeking to affect it.
With current quagmire in Iraq, the U.S. is totally incapable of engaging in another military conflict as an answer to the possibility of Iran's withdrawal from the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
There are several elements that make the superpower's unlimited capabilities greatly doubted.
First; the U.S. military’s actions in Iraq are clearly disfavoring the United States in the eyes of the international community. Second, the continuous failure of the U.S. military operations in Afghanistan to crush remnants of Taliban regime. Also, the U.S.’s military bases in Central Asia have become impotent. Then came Katrina and Rita to give the final touch to the picture, pushing oil prices to a record high, $68 per barrel.
Experts predict that if the U.S. attacked Iran, which produces almost three times as much oil as Iraq, this would push oil prices to $90-100 per barrel. Also in case the U.S. strikes Iran, according to economic analysts, OPEC won’t be able to make up for a sharp price increase, bringing about a serious crisis on the oil market and may even collapse.
