Origin of "Suicide bombing"

With reference to the message below, these are some points about
the subject, from which one can start researching:
- Throughout history of mankind, those who resist oppression,
occupation of their land, domination of their lives, and
stealing of their properties are called MARTYRS and HEROES.
- For some, using extreme means to resist occupiers might be
unacceptable, and for others, as in the case of the Palestinian
people who have been facing all kinds of murder, ethnic cleansing,
and total destruction of their homes, farms and lives at the hand
of a very brutal enemy - the Israeli/Zionist racist occupiers,
supported fully by the only superpower in the world - the US
government, over the last 55 years, is HEROISM.
- "Suicide bombing", as the Israeli occupiers call it, and "Martyrdom
Operations", as Palestinians call it, has been taking place in
Palestine only since 1996. It means that the first operation
occurred about 50 years after the establishment of the state of Israel
(in 1948; the year of the first Nakba "catastrophe") in historical
Palestine at the expense of its native people, and about 30 years
after the Israeli Occupation of the rest of Palestine (in 1967; the year
of the second Nakba), and about 3 years after the Oslo agreement
(in 1993; the year of the third Nakba).
- The first operation took place in retaliation of the mass
murder of about 30 Palestinians and many other dozens wounded,
who were gunned down while worshipping in the Ibrahimi mosque
in the city of al-Khalil (Hebron) in the Occupied West Bank.
The one who carried out that massacre was Dr. Baruch
Goldstein (MD); an American-Israeli RABBI.
- Regionally, the first operation was carried out by Hizbullah
(Lebanese Resistance Movement) in Lebanon in the 1970s against the
American marines who came then to help the Israeli invaders.
- Internationally, such operations have been carried out in different
countries, such as in Sri Lanka by the Tamil's Red Tigers against
the local government (see below). Such operations were also carried
out by Japanese Kamikaze (Divine Wind) fighter plane pilots during
- Further information on the subject can be found in "Martyrs and Heroes:
Some Reflections on Suicide Bombing", by Dr. Mohamed Elmasry; an
article published recently in "Dossier on Palestine", October 2002,
