CAN A CANAL STOP A TUNNEL?
The Defense Ministry published a bid notice yesterday for the construction of a massive and deep canal along the Philadelphi Route in southern Gaza. The project is aimed at preventing terrorist elements from digging underground tunnels via which they can smuggle weapons and explosives from Egypt into Gaza. The canal is to be 50-80 feet deep, stretching 2.5 miles along the Israeli-Egyptian border running through Rafiach. The bids are to be in by July 12.
The current version of the disengagement plan calls for the Philadelphi Route to remain under Israeli control, but the issue is under constant discussion. The army has found and destroyed more than 90 arms-smuggling tunnels between Egypt and Gaza over the past four years. The PA has condemned the Israeli canal plans. Arutz-7 -6-18-04
