Shaath couldn't get elected to anything - he's much too despised for his corruption and considered by some, maybe rightly, as working for 'others'. Indeed the Palestinian Legislative Assembly just a few years in an unprecented move publicly called for Shaath's removal from all positons of power in the 'Palestinian Authority' and for his indictment and trial. But now with American support, and more European monies, the much-despised Nabil Shaath is making a play for power as Arafat's 'appointed' Prime Minister. Shaath recently spent considerable time in Washington personally meeting with leading government officials including Secretary of State Colin Powell. The public trial balloon for elevating Shaath to a position where he can 'sign on the dotted line' went up this week; but this has been a long time in coming, primarily orchestrated by the US and Israel who have been using Shaath for some time (or worse) and have all the goods on him.
