U.S. Gen. Abizaid: Al Qaida operating online and further underground
A weakened Al Qaida now uses the Internet, rather than training camps, but still represents a potent threat, the commander of the U.S. Central Command said last week.
“Al Qaida and associated extremists are the main enemy to peace and stability in the region," Army Gen. John Abizaid said. “The enemy that brought us 9/11 continues to represent one of the greatest dangers to this nation.”
Abizaid told Congress that the problem with the current conflict is that “we're not involved in a war against a nation-state; we’re involved in a war against an enemy ideology that manifests itself throughout the region in a way unlike what we have seen in previous conflicts and campaigns.”
