Gush Shalom ad published in Ha'aretz, September 30, 2005:
ARROGANCE OF POWER
AROUND THE GLOBE
- In Nablus, an Israeli soldier opened fire without checking or caring on whom he is shooting, and killed an unarmed 13-year old Palestinian boy.
- Off the shores of Japan, an Israeli ship hit a Japanese boat, went on its way without a backward glance, and left seven fishermen to die among the waves.
On the same day, on two sides of the world – two expressions of the same sickness which afflicts the Israeli society: the arrogance of power, ignoring the other and trampling over him. The occupation and settlements are the most conspicuous of this phenomenon, but by no means the only one.
It is an illness which damages the relations of Israelis with the surrounding world – and with each other.
An illness which constitutes the greatest danger to our future.
This week Uri Nathan, Wissam Qablan, Alex Cohn, Orwa Zidan, and Shaul Mograbi-Berger are in military prison for their refusal to serve the occupation.
