Today Bush gathered a large Cabinet Table full (I almost wrote fool) of past Secretaries of State and Defense, 13 in all with a few no-shows - WP, NYT. It was billed as the President consulting with and listening to the past leaders of both parties as if he is really capable of such. But as with most things it's really all in the details and in this case the photo op. Much of the time was actually spent listening to Ambassadl Zal (as he is known) who was on a conference hookup from Baghdad and to top military briefers pushing their Bush-inspired Plan for Victory. And then, with all those senior top people gathered in the room as never before having so much to say the entire meeting was over in 40 minutes - sans the photos of course which is what it was really all about (just watch the way the evening news programs played it and click on the NYT story for the panoramic still). Colin Powell, whose former State Department Chief of Staff has been lambasting Bush/Cheney to no end, adn who himself was so badly used, just sat there not uttering a word. But fair enough, just maybe Powell was sending the requisite message here -- doesn't matter what you say to these guys and this isn't for real anyway.
