NOTES ON MOST IMPORTANT POINTS:
GOYETTE: That US might attack Iran in June is one of worst kept secrets.
Give us details.
RITTER: He received a phone call from someone connected to a Senior
Bush administration official who contacted about Iraq first to say that
Ritter's speaking out about WMD lies, etc. created a credibility problem
for them -- and how could they stop him from doing that. And secondly
they wanted his advice on obtaining Iraq stability. This is not a
person promoting transforming the middle east, so he's not for stability
per se but wants US military resources available in June because they
president has signed off on military preparations so ready
to attack in June.
GOYETTE: Bush told the European Union it was ridiculous he'd attack Iran.
RITTER: Then said he said that all options are on table. What's amazing
is no one in the media is asking Bush the direct question: have you
asked the Pentagon to prepare plans vs Iran?
GOYETTE: If American media was not brain dead it would ask. Where is
is the aircraft carrier USS Roosevelt? Where are the carrier groups? Are
RITTER: Three carrier groups are converging right now. They could send
up to six groups, all converging by June. Technically its a time they
switch over in rotations and there is an overlap in June. There is also
increased transport of munitions also towards that point. Of course,
Clinton did same tricks to Saddam to make him nervous. But you also
need political climate you can do the attack in. The US has to go to
security council. That's why picking Bolton as UN Ambassador is
important. He will attack and try to destroy UN so that when it will
not go along with the Iran attack they will say the UN is irrelevant.
GOYETTE: Besides whether just political posturing, why would they
choose June? So we know if this is serious or bluster?
RITTER: The date comes from Israel which has variety of intelligence
estimates saying the Iranian uranium ENRICHMENT program (not weapons
production) should be ready to go in June so that Iran will be
self-sufficient for nuclear power. There is NO evidence Iran's nuke
weapons program exists but Israelis afraid that once they can do
enriched uranium can easily go to making nuclear bombs. So that's why
say have to stop their program then or will reach point of no return.
This is the date that Israeli government officials have been putting out
for a year or so. They have gone public with these concerns. Dick
Cheney said said same thing on Imus. Israel is the driving force. This
is about Israel.
GOYETTE: In the talk you had with administration official did he say this?
RITTER: We didn't get into justifications, just the timeline for
stability in Iraq that they needed it stable to free up military
resources by June 2005. But without the US troops, there will be civil war.
PHONE QUESTION: There are three reasons US will attack Iran - Israel's
fear of Iran's nuclear capability; to stop Iran going to Eurodollars
which would hurt US economy; US wants to control of oil in middle east.
Also, don't forget that the Persian Gulf is very shallow and Iranians
have Russian sunburn missiles which US ships cannot stop.
RITTER: Of course, we can't take oil out of equation. And Iran COULD
affect the economy by going to Euros and could be a driving force for
rest of world going over. Israel's fear of POTENTIAL weapon and US
foreign policy conforms to this fear of Iran.
GOYETTE: Bush isn't look at the unintended consequences of such a war.
If Iranians close the Straight of Hormuz where all the oil comes
through, we are screwed. We can end up with an alignment of the whole
world against the US.
RITTER: Purely aerial bombardment can't stop Iran. And Iran won't just
retaliate vs. US troops but against other countries oil fields. It can
shut the Straight of Hormuz. However, US ships mostly will be in the
Red Sea and the Mediterranean so they won't be as vulnerable to
dangerous Iranian anti-ship missiles. Also, the Iranians are serious
state with operations all over the world and they can do terrorism all
over the world including inside the US.
