Advanced U.S. systems would let India counter China's control of shipping lanes
India is seeking to purchase advanced U.S. weaponry that would give its military greater capability to control strategic shipping lanes, U.S. and Indian officials say.
Delhi is planning to buy F-16 jet fighters, Patriot PAC-2 plus anti-missile systems, Aegis battle management systems and P-3 maritime surveillance aircraft.
The sales are expected to anger Beijing which views the sea-lanes near India as strategic transit routes for Middle East oil to reach energy-consuming China.
A recent Pentagon study stated that China has created a "string of pearls" strategy aimed at using military and diplomatic means to secure sea-lanes from the Persian Gulf to China's territorial waters.
