HEBRON - An Israeli court in Tel Aviv yesterday, Monday postponed the trial of imprisoned Fatah leader Marwan el-Barghouthi for another six months.
The court ordered the Palestinian national leader to be detained in solitary confinement in order to prevent him form coming into contact with the outside world.
El-Barghouthi refused to recognize the jurisdiction of Israeli courts over Palestinians. You are an occupying power, I dont recognize your jurisdiction over my people, he told the judge during a brief deliberation.
El-Barghouthi said the Palestinian people had the right and the moral duty to struggle against the apartheid Israeli regime and its decades-old colonialist occupation of the Palestinian homeland.
Earlier, el-Barghouthis lawyer strongly criticized statements by Israeli Attorney-General Elyachem Robenstein in which he described the detained Fatah leader as engineer of all acts of killings and a thug.
This shows that it is impossible for a Palestinian to receive justice in an Israeli court, the lawyer Khader Shkeirat was quoted as saying.
The Israeli government considers all aspects of Palestinian struggle against Israeli military occupation as terror. The Palestinians argue that they have a legitimate right and a paramount national and moral duty to end Israels military occupation of their country.
Israel continues to keep as many as 6,500 Palestinian political and resistance prisoners in 12 detention camps.
An Israeli official said last week that Israel would use the prisoners, many of them prisoners of conscience, as bargaining chips to extract political concessions from the Palestinian Authority.
