Closing it outright would be more than the Royal Qataris want to risk. Cutting it back substantially or pressuring/censoring it's content more than already is also not so easy to do at this point. But a disguised end to it's subsidy -- which is how it has managed to be what it is -- now that's something the Americans are angling for at this point. They've already tried many tactics, including helping the Saudis set up various newsoutlets under their control, and even setting up their own (AlHurra near the CIA in Virginia now gets more than $100 yearly to broadcast in Arabic to the Arab world). Now more crafty pressures and techniques are being applied; especially as the Americans get ready to substantially escalate their own spending on propaganda media.
