Long a mild and much-coopted critic, Arthur Hertzberg is known as an important American Jewish Zionist intellectual. What he says here in the pages of the NYTimes no doubt masks much greater despair and fear. Moreover, Hertzberg as usual is extraordinarily imbalanced and dishonest. While he advocates holding back a little money from the Israelis because of the settlements -- and even then he wants it put in escrow for the couple of hundred thousand Jewish settlers -- he advocates starving the Palestinians into submission, freezing their funds, killing off their leaders, and hardly anything at all for the now 4-million+ refugees. And not a word that the Israelis themselves have brought about this situation, Hertzberg and his friends helping considerably a long the way, while suggesting that the apartheid choice would be in the future, rather than the current reality.
