In an interview with The Daily Telegraph in Washington, Senator George McGovern, whose anti-war presidential campaign led to a landslide rejection at the polls in 1972, drove home the lessons of Vietnam and declared himself vindicated by history.
"I don't want to see us in Iraq for 10 or 20 years. I'm urging that next month we begin the withdrawal and we complete it by next June. It's not a stampede for the border, it's not this business of cut and run which Bush and company keep prattling about. It's an orderly withdrawal from a situation we should never have gotten ourselves into."
