OSLO II? - not likely, not really
MID-EAST REALITIES - MER - www.MiddleEast.Org - Washington - 12 October 2003: For the 'Liberal Zionist' - remnants of the Labor Party of yesteryear, it's all about abrogating the 'Right of Return' (which of course has always been the heart of the conflict), overriding decades of UN resolutions (the most powerful case for the Palestinians enforceable in the future through international law), and more pretending about a 'Palestinian State' (it won't be sovereign, nor armed, nor independent of Israel rule and control). Everything is left vague and uncertain and full of generalities rather than clearly defined -- everything that is when it comes to the what the Palestinians would get. As for what the Palestinians would give -- quite everything and quite specific. The "Right of Return' is totally given away, all UN resolutions are dumped unfulfilled, the 'Jewish State' of Israel is fully recognized, and the so-called 'Palestinian State' is but a fig-leaf mini-area(s) with all kinds of apartheid-like restrictions that in reality will remain in one form or another (not even mentioned in this so-called 'draft agreement'). As for who 'negotiated' this on the Palestinian side, ahumm, one quite discredited and despised jetsetter and one lesser fellow-traveler were all the Israelis could even get to join them in this. In short, these couple of Palestinians that the Israelis have long courted and turned into VIPs, allowed to travel everywhere they wish and rewarded with foreign bank accounts and properties, have done what they are paid for and signed on the dotted line. The Palestinian people, even so harshly battered and crushed as they are at this point, will not.
That said, the 'Palestinian Authority' will play along, after all that's why it was put in power in the first place, and why it has been kept in power ever since, collecting huge amounts of money for its key officials over the years, including Shaath, Abu Mazen, and Abu Alaa.
