The first major historical division of the area was done a few generations ago by the Brits - and the results are more evident than ever today. Back when the British installed the loosing Hashemites in 'TransJordan' (as well as in Baghdad, but that's another story). Then as today the Hashemites ruled on behalf of the Western powers that gave them birth, funds, and arms. And it was the 'Collusion Across the Jordan' that helped make it possible for the Zionists and the Hashemites to then divide the area west of the Jordan in 1948. Indeed, without the Hashemites ruling in Transjordan and Baghdad, and the al-Sauds and al-Sabahs doing the same thanks to the West in the Gulf, the terrible weakness and co-optation of the Arab would never have happened and todays nightmare in the once Holy Land would never have come to pass.
