MER FlashBack - 3 Years Ago WHAT "OSLO", THE USA, and ARAFAT HAVE WROUGHT "For the first time in years, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat picked up a rifle on Monday night during the missile attack." MID-EAST REALITIES - www.MiddleEast.Org - Washington - 11/23/2000: In the end, what the Oslo "Peace Process" has presented the Israelis with is the mechanism to effectively control the Palestinians, now including the Arafat regime. In the last two months the Israelis have been able to easily lock Palestinians up on what are essentially reservations that Arafat agreed to create. These are the areas that the Oslo "peace process" documents refer to as Areas "A" -- the mostly densely populated Palestinian towns and cities like Nablus, Hebron, Ramallah where all entry and exit routes are now guarded by Israeli tanks and checkposts. Palestinians now living in isolated Areas "A" on the West Bank, and in what is now essentially a large Israeli prison, the Gaza Strip, now face a massive and unprecedented Israeli blockade. The Israeli army -- whose presence was actually agreed to by Arafat when he signed various agreements in Washington, Cairo, Hebron, and Sharm el-Sheik -- now can prevent even basic supplies including food and fuel from the Palestinian areas. More and more the people are realizing their status on controlled and blockaded "reservations" or "Bantustans" -- some are beginning to think of the areas as "concentration camps". In Gaza, gasoline, kerosene and cooking gas (propane) have run out and Palestinians are going to their olive and orange trees to cut them up to use the wood for cooking and heating. It should be obvious by now what is really going on -- the Israelis are trying to force the Palestinians to surrender and they are in a better position to do so precisely because of the agreements and arrangements the Arafat regime has made with them since Oslo. Indeed, that is what Oslo was really about from the beginning -- strangulation of the Palestinians, now divided more than ever on separated and surrounded reservations, controlled by a terribly repressive and corrupt regime, infiltrated by the CIA. NEWSFLASH from MER reader in Nablus this morning: "An Israeli helicopter just shot a missile at a car here. One person was killed and cannot be identified now... His body is torn apart and I can see all the people gathering at the accident point and carrying him... The helicopter is still flying over the place... I can't believe what is happening here!" PALESTINIANS WON'T YIELD TO FIREPOWER GAZA (Reuters - 22 Nov 2000): Sixty-year-old Aysha Hmeid and dozens of Palestinians rushed yesterday to examine the damage wrought by an Israeli missile strike on Palestinian police headquarters in Gaza City the night before. The building was largely in ruins. But Hmeid ululated with joy when policemen of the Palestinian Preventive Security Service told her none of them had been hurt. “Thank God. Offices can be rebuilt. There is nothing we should worry about as long as you can still carry a rifle,” she told policemen who were collecting the remains of at least 17 missiles that ploughed into the three-story building. “Even if they bombarded us every day and night we would not leave our land and we would not surrender,” she said. Israeli helicopters and gunboats fired missiles into Palestinian security targets throughout the Gaza Strip on Monday after Palestinians bombed a Gaza Israeli settlers’ schoolbus, killing two people and injuring several children. For the first time in years, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat picked up a rifle on Monday night during the missile attack, Palestinian cabinet minister Freih Abu Meddein said. “The President was armed with his automatic rifle last night. A missile does not distinguish between Yasser Arafat and any other Palestinian,” Abu Meddein said. Palestinian hospital officials said they had treated about 80 people, mostly for shocks and bruises, from the teeming main city of the Mediterranean desert strip and from the refugee camps of Nusairat and Jabalya. A Palestinian policeman showed journalists pieces of missiles emblazoned with the letters USA. “It says USA. A gift from (US President) Bill Clinton to the Palestinian people,” the policeman said wryly. It looked like the whole headquarters would need rebuilding. Its walls had crumpled or were teetering on the verge of collapse, and all windows were smashed. Shards of glass and empty casings of missiles were scattered across the ground. There were similar scenes of destruction at security service, civil defence and naval buildings of Arafat’s mainstream Fatah faction and at the headquarters of Force 17, his special guard unit, in Gaza City. Palestinians said such Israeli attacks would stiffen their determination to regain their “national” rights and would not make them stop their independence struggle in Gaza and the West Bank, which Israel conquered in the 1967 Middle East war. Almost 250 people have been killed over the eight weeks of Palestinian-Israeli conflict, most of them Palestinians. Three million Palestinians living in Gaza and the West Bank want to oust 200,000 Jews living in army-guarded settlements that effectively fragment the two territories. “There won’t be funerals only in Palestine. Funerals will be in Israel as well. The time in which we have been killed alone has gone,” Abu Meddein said. – Reuters
