MID-EAST REALITIES - MER - www.MiddleEast.Org - Washington
- 14 January 2004: Recently at a small
think-tank meeting on U.S. foreign policy an astute visiting journalist
from Eastern Europe (via USGovernment grant and visa of course)
questioned why those around the table were all thinking so similiarly
and not speaking at all about some important subjects. Before she
came to the United States to visit, she thought the U.S. was a free
country with a free and independent press she said. But what she
found reminded her, she actually said to the group, of Pravda in
the days of the Soviet Union of old. Even more amazingly, none
of the establishment journalists around the table even bothered to
challenge this comment, though the person who made it was clearly both
serious and credible.
Yesterday, in an impressive ornate U.S. Senate Hearing Room, the U.S.
'private sector' put on an expensive day-long high-energy high-impact
seminar calling it 'The Real State
of the Union'. They sent out messages far and wide hoping
to get many attendies, offering up as incentive free breakfast and
lunch. After all, since the real goal was to broadcast the
proceedings nation-wide on C-span -- an immense propaganda as well as
occasional educational vehicle -- getting as many 'extras' in the
audience was important as well. Quite a free advertisement
for the sponsoring magazine as well (well minus the costs of
production, and the free meals that is).
Now get this. In a panel devoted to the hows and whys and
future of the Iraq invasion/occupation and U.S. 'involvement' in the
Middle East no one ever uttered mention of the Jewish lobby, AIPAC,
Sharon's 9+ visits with Bush...et. al. No significant
mention either of Israel's considerable influence or of what happens in
the U.S., or of what is being done to the Palestinians with all that
American money and support, nor even of the so-called 'peace process'
for that matter. It's bad enough that the carefully chosen
journalists and analysts stayed to their scripts and pretended as if
these things aren't inter-connected in any way. But it's
downright dishonest and intellectually/educationally deceptively
propagandistic to refuse to even mention some of the key aspects to
what is really going on these days, both in Washington and in the
Middle East.
This is what tries to pass itself off as the 'private independent'
sector in the capital of today's superpower. A far more
sophisticated system than ever there was in the Soviet empire of old in
Pravda's hayday.
