PALESTINE "COMPROMISE" THROUGH INTIMIDATION AND THREATS CLAIMS OIC

By Ahmed Versi in Durban

Muslim countries claimed they were threatened and intimidated to accept the compromise statement on Palestine which was proposed by the President of the Conference earlier this week. Speaking at the final day of the Conference at the plenary session this morning, the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) spokesperson said: “The atmosphere surrounding the negotiations on this issue were marred by threats, intimidation, redlines and ultimatums, not to mention the distorting and misleading media campaign orchestrated against our group.” The Conference refused to accept a compromise solution by the OIC. However, due to divisions within the OIC, and not wanting to “block consensus”, they accepted the South African compromise which did not condemn Israel for it human rights abuses and racist policies. Iran also made a dissenting statement at the Conference saying that certain countries had “imposed their views on others” and “the atmosphere of intimidation, threat and ultimatum”.
