Yasser Arafat
Dominates
Even In or Near Death MIDDLEEAST.ORG - MER - Washington - 4 November: Yesterday a spokesman for Yasser Arafat sent 'congratulations' to George Bush, in Arafat's name, for winning the American election. Today, while taking questions at his first post-election news conference, Bush was told by a reportwe Arafat had just died and Bush simply said "God bless his soul" and that he would renew efforts for a "free Palestinian State to live in peace with Israel". Other reports at the moment indicate Arafat may be near death, or brain-dead in a coma, but not yet clinically dead. As for the symbolism of it all... It now appears Arafat will die not in Palestine as he has always said he wanted to, not even in the Arab world. Rather he will die in a western capital far away from his people who will clearly mourn him as no other even though he has left them in such a miserable and destitute state of affairs. The Americans and the Israelis have no real intention of allowing a real, independent, or sovereign Palestinian State. They have done everything they could for so long now to prevent just that reality. Tragically however Yasser Arafat and his top 'VIP' lieutenants -- Sha'ath, Abu Mazen, Abu Allla -- allowed themselves to become props in this deceptive charade during which the Israelis have raced ahead to vanquish the Palestinian people even from each other and turned them into worse than Indians on Reservations, worse than Blacks subjected to Apartheid. And now, with possibly lasting further tragic symbolism, the burial of a man will also suggest the burial in reality of the Palestinian nationalist cause which this man had come embody for his people and for the whole watching world. Arafat is now likely to be buried not in a free Palestine, not in Jerusalem, not really as the kind of historic figure he so desperately sought to be. Rather he will be likely buried in Occupied Palestine, in the city of Ramallah, behind the new Apartheid Wall, with arch nemesis Ariel Sharon deciding on the place and giving his 'permission'. How sad...how tragic... And the future now on the horizon appears still more gloomy and more bloody than the past now about to be symbolically buried with the body of the single man who has dominated Palestinian history ever since the founding of the Palestine Liberation Organization in the 1960s. Arafat's Impending Death now Dominates the news
