JANUARY ELECTIONS
Regime Change by Decapitation Being 'Gamed' for Iran

"The Pentagon is considering strikes in support of [Iran] regime
change, including attacks on the leadership, as well as on
political and security targets... The new 'modeling' at the
Pentagon, with its shift in emphasis from suspected nuclear
sites to political target lists, is said to be causing deep anxiety
among officials in Britain, France, and Germany..."

MER - MiddleEast.Org - Washington - 23 November - updated: Just a few weeks ahead now the January elections being carefully choreographed by the Americans for both occupied Iraq and occupied Palestine are going to be, well... "interesting". And the problems that are likely to result from these contorted elections, one in a country occupied by U.S. troops and the CIA, the other in 'territories' occupied by Israeli troops and the CIA -- especially if the not very popular U.S.-sponsored candidates actually 'win', are going to be, well... "considerable".
Under the conditions that actually exist -- unprecedented military occupation, extraordinary impoverishment and bribery, still-expanding CIA infiltration, massive propaganda manipulation -- the very concept of 'free and fair' elections takes quite a credibility stretch.
Even so, in both occupied Iraq and Palestine, the Americans are in the position of fronting very unpopular candidates who will have a very hard time winning no matter how much help and money and chicanery comes their way.
The recently staged election of another long-time CIA-man, Hamid Karzai in Afghanistan, may not be a workable paradigm for the Agency when it comes to today's terribly demoralized, impoverished, and infiltrated historic lands of Mesopotamia and the once Holy Land.
Just yesterday for instance, one of the few senior stateman among the Palestinians, the man who represented Palestine at the 1991 post-Gulf War I Madrid Conference, Dr. Haidar Abdul-Shafi, endorsed not the American choice - Abu Mazen - but rather a relative of the Israeli-imprisoned popular leader Marwan Barghouti, Mustapha Barghouti.
The real American goal in all these countries of course is not just 'regime change', but the empowerment of a compliant in-bed and on-the-take regime that will do as modern-day Rome mandates. That the Anglo-American crusading forces, along with the Europeans, have been pushing on the region in one way or another ever since the desolution of the Ottoman Empire in the days of Lawrence of Arabia.
But the Washington mantra has never been more clear and more militant than it is today: "'Comply! Resistance is Futile and Rewards are Considerable". And this is all the more the case with the demise by 'stealth assassination' of Yasser Arafat. The additional message for Palestinian and Arab leaders, however masked, is now more clear as well: "If we can do that to Arafat and get away with it we can do it to any of you if you get out of line and don't do what we say you must."
All this said, as important as occupied Iraq and occupied Palestine may be, the region in a sense totters more these days on what is happening in the big and potentially powerful and still independent country of Iran. The American armies now encircle that crucial country; and the pressure is on big time.
When it comes to Iran the CIA's many attempts at regime change since the 1979 revolution, including the Iraqi-sponsored invasion in 1980 which was also CIA-inspired), have all failed. In occupied Iraq and Palestine regime change has been brought about through a combination of military force, CIA-intrique, and money manipulation...all leading to the upcoming twisted January elections. In Iran however, everything else having failed for the American Empire, and with the country continuing to grow in military as well as economic strength, the neocon-run Pentagon is now 'war-gaming' how to decapitate the regime through a kind of mass leadership assassination, which still plotting with the Israelis how to take out Iran's growing military might. Though some will think this is beginning to sound a little far-fetched, this brief report in the Jerusalem Post Monday should not be easily dismissed.

Report: US discussing strikes on Iran
By DOUGLAS DAVIS

Nov. 21, 2004 - LONDON – Pentagon officials are said to be discussing possible military action to neutralize Iran's nuclear weapons threat, according to a report in London's Observer. US administration sources are quoted as saying that air strikes – "either by the US or Israel" – to wipe out Iran's fledgling nuclear program would be difficult because of a lack of clear intelligence about where key components are located.

Instead, sources quoted by the paper said the Pentagon is considering strikes in support of regime change, including attacks on the leadership, as well as on political and security targets
.
The new "modeling" at the Pentagon, with its shift in emphasis from suspected nuclear sites to political target lists, is said to be causing deep anxiety among officials in Britain, France, and Germany, who last week appeared to have negotiated a deal with Teheran to cease work that could contribute to a nuclear weapons program. But Washington is said to be skeptical about the deal.

Dr. Haidar Abdul Shafi Endorses Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi in the Upcoming Palestinian Presidential Elections

22 November 2004 - Palestine Monitor: Dr. Haidar Abdul Shafi has endorsed Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi for President, stating that Dr. Barghouthi will serve as a faithful Palestinian national representative in elections that are extremely important to the future of the Palestinian people. Dr. Abdul Shafi apologized today that he would not be able to run in the elections himself due to health concerns.

Dr. Abdul Shafi hopes that Dr. Barghouthi will be supported by all national and democratic political parties and civil society, by Palestinians in the cities, villages, and refugee camps, and by everyone interested in establishing a democratic and unified system of Palestinian governance.

Dr. Abdul Shafi said that he has known, worked, and struggled with Dr. Barghouthi for many years and puts full trust in Dr. Barghouthi’s national strategy. He believes Dr. Barghouthi will bring a new and younger energy to the Palestinian leadership and the national struggle.

Dr. Barghouthi is well-known in the history of the Palestinian struggle and very active in Palestine and around the world for the Palestinian cause. He has a strong position with Palestinians in the international community and a good relationship with all social classes within Palestine, especially the economically disadvantaged.

Dr. Abdul Shafi believes that Dr. Barghouthi is the best choice for President to help the Palestinian people end the occupation, remove the settlements, ensure the rights of refugees, and achieve a free Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
